Removing a birthmark

Birthmarks are a common occurrence and can sometimes be unsightly. You may want to remove a birthmark for medical or cosmetic reasons. Our doctors can advise you on whether a birthmark may be suspicious looking and what the best way to remove it and prevent scarring will be. The procedure is done with local anaesthetic in our clinic. In requested a biopsy of the birthmark can be conducted.

How is a birthmark removed?

First, our doctors thoroughly examine the birthmark. Then the area around the birthmark is numbed with local anaesthetic. Once the anaesthetic takes effect, an incision is made and the birthmark is removed in a way that minimizes scarring. If necessary, the incision is sutured.

Is the removal of a birthmark safe?

The treatment is safe and virtually painless.

Birthmark removal and aftercare

  • In most cases, paracetamol is sufficient for relieving any pain after the procedure.
  • We advise you not to smoke until the stitches are removed. Smoking may increase the risk of complications.
  • We advise you not to expose the treated area to sunlight/UV light (tanning beds) for at least 3 months after surgery.

Aftercare for the incision site/wound

  • For a period of 24 hours after surgery, do not touch the wound. After this 24-hour period, you can shower.
  • Pat the wound dry after cleaning it. Do not use wiping motions to dry the wound.
